EGA was engaged by our client to carry out remediation supervision and site validation works as part of a commercial / industrial redevelopment, following identification of contaminated soil materials and groundwater on-site and down gradient of the site, contaminated with Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Volatile Halogenated Compounds (VHC) substances and friable asbestos.

Impacted soils were remediated using a ‘cap and contain’ strategy. The containment strategy was a passive system comprised of clean fill soils and an orange geotextile marker layer. Concrete hardstand is present across atop majority of the containment cells at the site with the exception of small-scale landscaped areas.

As part of the redevelopment works at the site, thirty-three (33) monitoring wells were decommissioned and re-installed and a new updated Groundwater Management Plan (GMP) prepared to address the newly installed monitoring wells.

Following remediation and validation activities, a Long-term Environmental Management Plan (LTEMP) was prepared detailing the passive management strategies to manage contained impacted soils and groundwater.

The following outcomes were achieved through careful planning and implementation of the proposed remediation strategies:

• All environmental and occupational hygiene scope was managed by EGA, streamlining data collection and collation, and reducing costs associated with numerous consultants onsite;
• The remedial goal was achieved in a timely manner, taking into consideration the review and approval process from numerous stakeholders; and
• The vast majority of soil materials were retained onsite, ensuring a commercially feasible and sustainable outcome for the client; and
• The long-term management strategy and associated LTEMP prepared ensures a straightforward approach to managing onsite contamination indefinitely for future site operations.
