EGA was engaged by our client to carry out remediation supervision and site validation works as part of a low-density residential redevelopment, following identification of approximately 20,000 tonnes of non-friable asbestos impacted fill materials across the site.

Impacted soils were remediated using an ‘onsite treatment’ strategy, consisting of physical removal (ie hen picking) of visual asbestos fibre cement fragments from impacted soil materials, followed by placement of the treated soil materials at a suitable depth beneath future proposed local roadways.

EGA incorporated a staged approach, including staged site validation reporting, to allow for development / construction on earlier stages of the subdivision, while treatment activities took place over the course of a year.

The following outcomes were achieved through careful planning and implementation of the proposed remediation strategies:

• All environmental and occupational hygiene scope was managed by EGA, streamlining data collection and collation, and reducing costs associated with numerous consultants onsite;
• The remedial goal was achieved in a timely manner, taking into consideration the need to commence construction phase scope on earlier stages of the subdivision;
• The vast majority of soil materials were retained onsite with a total savings of over $5 million in remediation costs compared to the original proposed strategy of disposal offsite, ensuring a commercially feasible and sustainable outcome for the client; and
• Given the soil materials had been remediated to a level below the adopted site assessment criteria, and were placed at a suitable depth, in line with current legislation, no long-term management of the retained soil materials was required.
